Book Review: Wigs on the Green, by Nancy Mitford

Nancy Mitford never allowed her 1935 novel Wigs on the Green to be republished in her lifetime, for fear of offending her family. In the novel she lampoons the British fascist movement, and gives a fascinating portrait of her sister, Unity Mitford. Unity would make friends with Hitler, only to shoot herself in the head when he declared war on Britain. While Nancy Mitford pokes a lot of fun at the British fascists, she ultimately sends up her own misguided romantic dreams of love and marriage in this frothy yet fun look at the smart young set of 1930s England.
