A Review of "Metallica and Philosophy"

When did Metallica sell out: with the release of Load, the Black Album, or Ride the Lighting? Or did they never sell out? Why were Metallica and their fans such nonconformists, and why can the band never assume that role again? What in the world was up with Napster? These questions and many more are examined in the book "Metallica and Philosophy: A Crash Course in Brain Surgery."

In Review - The Mole People (1993)

There were many times during my stay in New York City in the spring of 2008, when I stood on a subway platform beneath the streets of Manhattan, and watched some work detail, or maintenance squad disappear into the dark, dimly lit tunnels of the New York subway system. Jennifer Toth's 'The Mole People' is not a story about the thousands of maintenance men and women working for the New York City Metropolitan Transit Authority. Instead, the book tells the story of thousands of New York's homeless who turn abandoned subway tunnels deep underneath Manhattan into their homes.

Review of The Great Books by Anthony O'Hear, Professor of Philosophy

Initially I struggled while reading The Great Books by Anthony O'Hear, and thought it was dry and too academic. I decided to take a closer look at my feelings and prejudices toward The Great Books and discovered that I was simply tired of reading about Greek and Roman tragedies, which are the first few books that are covered. I was also tired and wary of all the war imagery and "gods" with larger-than-life egos, behaving very badly. After acknowledging my feelings, I got into The Great Books and started to enjoy the experience.

Musings by Starlight - In Defence of the Herbert Syndrome

Some may argue that the underlying force guiding authors of multiple novels set in the same universe is that of monetary compensation. As a life-long reader of science fiction who is still working on the Dune and Wheel of Time series', I would say that this motive is over-simplified at best. If a universe still has possibilities for commentary on the nature of our world, why shouldn't it be used to tell more stories about the human race?

The Inner Circle by Brad Meltzer

This really is a pretty good book that just takes forever getting to the fast paced drama. We are literally half way through and still setting up the characters and story line before there is any major action. Anyway, Beecher White works in the National Archives with the most important documents in the entire country. His life is pretty dull with the exception of a fianc? who recently left him for no apparent reason which he is still moping about. His family and friends are trying to get him to forget about her and move on but he hangs on. I think we are supposed to believe he is pathetic due to the task in front of him which is the crux of the story.

Laura Ingalls Wilder based all her fiction on her own experiences of frontier life in 19th century America, with the exception of Farmer Boy, which describes her husband's growing up on a farm in New York State. Nancy Mitford never allowed her 1935 novel Wigs on the Green to be republished in her lifetime, for fear of offending her family. In the novel she lampoons the British fascist movement, and gives a fascinating portrait of her sister, Unity Mitford. Unity would make friends with Hitler, only to shoot herself in the head when he declared war on Britain. While Nancy Mitford pokes a lot of fun at the British fascists, she ultimately sends up her own misguided romantic dreams of love and marriage in this frothy yet fun look at the smart young set of 1930s England.
